Well, half of it. The dealer plays by a rulebook printed on the felt, you get to see one of their cards, and you get to make every decision. That combination doesn't exist anywhere else in the building, and it's why the smart money has been sitting here since 1962. The catch: the casino knows it too, and has spent sixty years quietly making the game worse.
You and the dealer each get two cards; the dealer shows one. Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Cards are face value, pictures are 10, aces are 1 or 11. You can hit (take a card), stand, double (double your bet, take exactly one card), split a pair into two hands, or sometimes surrender (fold for half). The dealer has no choices: they hit to 16 and stand on 17. A two-card 21 is a blackjack and pays 3:2 — or it used to.
The whole edge lives in an asymmetry: if you bust, you lose even if the dealer busts afterwards. That single rule is worth about 8% to the house. Everything you're allowed to do — doubling, splitting, 3:2 on naturals, seeing the upcard — claws most of it back. Play the mathematically correct decision every time ("basic strategy", a chart you can learn in an afternoon, buy in the gift shop, keep on the table in front of you, or simply ask the dealer about) and you're left paying roughly half a percent.

Pick a bet, a unit and a number of bets. The simulator plays 1,000 sessions from the bet's actual outcome table — not a normal approximation — and shows the spread, the drawdowns, and how long it takes before the house edge stops hiding behind luck. Play a thousand sessions of basic strategy and watch how long the half-percent edge stays invisible — then switch the table to 6:5 and watch it stop hiding.
How it works. When a lot of small cards have been dealt, the remaining deck is rich in tens and aces, which favours the player (more blackjacks at 3:2, more dealer busts, better doubles). A counter keeps a running tally — the Hi-Lo system adds one for every 2–6 and subtracts one for every 10 or ace — divides by the decks remaining, and bets big only when the count says the next hand is +EV. It's not memorising cards; it's tracking one integer while looking bored. Done well against a good game, the player edge is about 0.5–1.5%, with brutal variance. Beyond counting there's shuffle tracking (following clumps of high cards through a sloppy shuffle), hole-carding (a dealer who flashes the down card) and ace sequencing — rarer, stronger, and all reliant on the casino's mistakes rather than yours.
Legality. Using your brain is legal everywhere. Using a device — a phone app, a hidden computer, anything that "projects the outcome" — is a felony in Nevada and most other jurisdictions, and the definition is broad enough that you should assume "any device" means any device. Team play with signals is legal as long as no device is involved; casinos treat it as war.
Acceptance. In most of the world, a private business can refuse to serve you, and a casino that identifies a counter will "back you off" (you can play anything but blackjack), flat-bet you, shuffle up on you, or trespass you entirely. New Jersey is the famous exception — since a 1982 court ruling Atlantic City casinos can't bar counters, so they respond with countermeasures: 8 decks, deep cut cards, continuous shufflers. Casinos also share photos and names through surveillance networks. The bottom line for a hobbyist: you can learn to count for the pleasure of knowing how the game really works. Trying to make a living at it is a job with a boss who fires you on sight.
